If you’re like me, you love to research every possible inch of your destination before arriving.
That’s why we’ve compiled a series of guides to help plan your vacation. That way, once you actually get to Universal, you’ll spend your time riding instead of worrying. So let’s get started.
Weather
(If you’re a native of SoCal, you can go ahead and skip this section)
Though very moderate in comparison to the rest of the United States, the San Fernando Valley has been known to exhibit some of the extremes when it comes to weather in region. Expect the temperature to range from 40°F - 100°F depending on the season.

Despite the dramatic dips at times, Universal City remains relatively comfortable throughout the entire year.

What to bring
People generally bring a camera, cash and their cell phone when embarking into a theme park. Like many other parks, Universal is generally pretty lenient on items you can bring through their gates, though food is sometimes frowned upon by gate employees.

It may also be wise to bring some extra clothes if you plan on getting wet, such as a pair of socks or an extra T-Shirt. Walking around in wet socks can be very uncomfortable at times, so do keep that in mind before packing. It may also be wise to bring some seasonal items such as a hat, sunscreen or sunglasses. Like I mentioned above, harsh winters and unbearable summers aren’t too uncommon during some parts of the season, so do keep a check of the weather before heading out. I’ll elaborate on that in another section of this article.
If you do plan on bringing some extra apparel, lockers can be found spread across the entire park, normally near major rides or restrooms. Keep in mind that a nominal fee is required, so bring some extra change or a credit card if you plan on using one. Strollers and wheelchairs are also welcome and rentals are provided upon request should you forget bring one of your own. Just see Guest Services upon entering through the arch and they’ll be glad to assist you.
As always, bring a few water bottles. It seems to be a ripoff wherever you go.
Attire
Fall (70-85°F during the day / 50-70°F at night)
Dress lightly. T-Shirt, shorts, jeans and a light jacket are recommended. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are also suggested.
Winter (55-70°F during the day / 40-55°F at night)
Dress moderately-heavily. T-Shirt, jeans, a moderate to heavy jacket are all recommended. Wind chills can get pretty bad during the season, so it might be wise to bring a windbreaker. Don’t bother putting on sunscreen.
Spring (68-78°F during the day / 50-68°F at night)
Dress moderately. T-Shirt, shorts, and jeans along with a light jacket. Some light sunscreen might be useful, but nothing too bad.
Summer (72-98°F during the day / 54-72°F at night)
Dress very lightly. T-Shirt and shorts. Bring plenty of sunscreen, a pair of sunglasses and a hat. Because of the extended park hours, it might also be wise to bring a very light jacket, but don’t worry if you leave it at home.
Buying tickets / Discounts
Save time and money by buying online. Not only could you save some dough, you’ll also save yourself from the hassle of waiting in line just to get into the park. Be smart and buy ahead.
Discounts can be found all over Southern California. They usually run some sort of billboard/soda can promotion, so always keep your eyes peeled. If you happen to know an annual pass holder, you can also save around 10-15% on ticket purchases by using his pass as a promo code.
Children
Hate to say it, but Universal Studios isn’t a park I would suggest to those younger than 6 or 7. Despite their attempt at introducing family friendly attractions, Universal is still very much oriented towards teens or adults. That’s not to say your child will have a bad time at the park, but don’t be surprised if they aren’t having fun on the Studio Tour of Jurassic Park.
However, if you do decide to bring your child, Universal has plenty amenities to help them along. There are changing stations in most of the restrooms, and diapers are available for purchase. Universal also has a child swap, which allows you to “swap” your child with another family while you ride. When you’re finished, you simply switch positions, allowing everyone in your party to ride.
